Business Ideas for Women in India

Eighteen practical ideas for women, with what each costs, the skills it needs and how to take the first step.

  • Updated 10 Oct 2026

These business ideas for women are picked for real life in India. Some fit around school runs and housework. Some need a small shop. A few can grow into a proper brand with staff. Every idea below shows the rough money needed, the skills that help, the licences you may need and three or four first steps.

Use the filters in your head as you read. How many hours can you give each day? How much money can you risk without touching household savings? What do people already ask you for help with? The best idea is usually sitting inside the answer to that last question.

How to choose the best business idea for you

Many women start with what they enjoy and then struggle to find buyers. Flip the order. Start with people who already pay for something and see if you can serve them better, closer or cheaper.

  • Look at your street. Which services do women in your area travel far for? A good blouse tailor, a reliable creche, a trained beautician who comes home?
  • Test before you spend. Take three paid orders from people outside your family before you buy machines or rent a shop.
  • Count your hours honestly. A driving school needs you at fixed hours every day. A mehendi business is busy in wedding season and quiet otherwise. Pick the rhythm that suits your home.
  • Know your number. Write down what one order costs you in material, travel and time. Price above that, or the business slowly eats your savings.

Business ideas for women at home

Many ideas above start from home, such as saree pre pleating, activity kits, cooking classes and bridal trousseau packing. Working from home keeps rent at zero, but treat it like a workplace. Fix working hours, keep a separate corner for stock and tools, and tell family which hours are for work. For more ideas that run fully from the house, see our list of home business ideas.

Business for ladies with low investment

A low budget is not a weak start. Mehendi, saree draping, doorstep beauty services and self defence classes can begin with well under ₹50,000. The money goes into good material and a few samples, not furniture. Keep your first stock small and buy more only when orders come in. Our page on low investment business ideas has more options in this range.

Manufacturing business for ladies sitting at home

Small production work suits women who like making things with their hands. Kids ethnic wear, bridal trousseau packing and sanitary pad units are all on the list above. Many self help groups in villages and small towns run such units together, which spreads the cost and the work. If you want to make and sell products in bigger volumes, read our guide to manufacturing business ideas.

Business loan for women and government support

Women can borrow under the same schemes as everyone else, and some schemes give women better terms. Here is what is open and how it helps.

  • Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana: loans for small non farm businesses without collateral, in four slabs. Shishu is up to ₹50,000, Kishor above ₹50,000 up to ₹5 lakh, Tarun above ₹5 lakh up to ₹10 lakh, and Tarun Plus above ₹10 lakh up to ₹20 lakh for those who have repaid a Tarun loan. Women hold most Mudra loan accounts.
  • PMEGP: a subsidy linked to a bank loan for new units. Women count as a special category, so the subsidy is 25% of project cost in urban areas and 35% in rural areas, and your own share is 5%. Project cost can go up to ₹50 lakh for manufacturing and ₹20 lakh for service units.
  • PM Vishwakarma: for traditional trades such as tailoring, garland making and pottery. It offers training with a stipend, a toolkit voucher and collateral free loans of ₹1 lakh and then ₹2 lakh at a concessional rate.
  • Self help group support: members of food processing self help groups can get seed capital of up to ₹40,000 each under the PMFME scheme for working capital and small tools.
  • Stand-Up India: this scheme gave loans of ₹10 lakh to ₹1 crore to women and SC and ST entrepreneurs for a first venture. Its last stated period has ended, so check standupmitra.in or ask your bank whether it is open now.

Read more on business loans and government loan schemes before you visit the bank. Go with a simple written plan; a bank officer takes a plan on paper far more seriously than a plan described in words.

Registration in simple words

You do not need every licence on day one, but do not ignore them either.

  • Udyam registration is free, online and based on Aadhaar. It makes your business a recognised micro enterprise, which helps with loans and schemes. See Udyam registration.
  • GST becomes compulsory once yearly turnover crosses ₹40 lakh for most sellers of goods or ₹20 lakh for services. Some states have lower limits, and some kinds of sellers must register earlier. See GST registration.
  • FSSAI registration is needed for any food business, even a small one from home.

Practical tips that save trouble later

  • Open a separate bank account for the business from day one. It keeps money clear and builds a record for future loans.
  • Keep the business in your name if you run it. Many schemes need the woman to own the enterprise.
  • For home visits, share your location with someone you trust and take new clients from known references first.
  • Ask for an advance on custom orders. It protects you from cancelled orders and unpaid bills.
  • Give yourself one year. Most small businesses take months to find steady customers.
Scheme status: the last approved period of PMEGP has ended, and new subsidy releases depend on the government extending the scheme. Check the PMEGP e portal or your District Industries Centre before you apply.

Questions people ask

Which business is best for women at home?

The best one uses a skill you already have and needs little rent. Saree draping, cooking classes, bridal trousseau packing and toddler activity kits are good starting points. Test with a few paid orders before you invest more.

Can a woman get a business loan without collateral?

Yes. Mudra loans up to ₹20 lakh are given without collateral, and women hold most Mudra accounts. PM Vishwakarma also gives collateral free loans to people in traditional trades such as tailoring. The bank will still check your plan and repayment ability.

Is there a government subsidy for women entrepreneurs?

Under PMEGP, women are a special category. The subsidy is 25% of project cost in urban areas and 35% in rural areas, and the woman puts in 5% as her own share. Apply on the official PMEGP portal run by KVIC.

Do I need GST registration to start a small business?

Not always. GST is compulsory once turnover crosses ₹40 lakh for most goods sellers or ₹20 lakh for services, with lower limits in some states. Some sellers, such as those selling across states or on certain online platforms, may need it earlier.

How can I run a business and manage my home?

Pick a business with hours that fit your day, such as classes or made to order products. Fix work hours, ask family for specific help and hire help for repetitive tasks once orders grow. Start small so the business does not take over the home.
