Looking for business ideas that actually work in India? This page lists 30 practical ideas, from small shops and local services to tech, health and farming, with a rough budget, the skills you need and the first steps for each. Use the idea finder below to filter ideas by budget, place and category, then read the cards and the tips that follow.
How to pick from these business ideas
A good idea on paper can fail on your street. Before you choose, ask yourself four simple questions.
- Who will pay, and how often? A service people need every week, like laundry or a phone repair, is easier to grow than something they buy once in five years.
- What can you do well already? Your skill, your contacts and your patience are your real capital. Money comes second.
- How much can you lose without hurting your family? Start with that amount, not with a loan you are scared of.
- Can you test it in 30 days? Take 10 orders, run one weekend stall or serve 5 customers before you sign a shop rent agreement.

Best business ideas in India right now
The best business ideas in India today usually ride on a few big shifts. Families have more phones, scooters, appliances and solar panels, and all of them need repair and service. Older parents live alone in many homes and need care and equipment. Towns are growing, so people want gyms, salons, coaching and clean laundry close to home. Small shops want to be found online but do not know how. Each of these shifts appears in the list above.
Notice that most of these are not new inventions. They are old needs served better, faster or closer to the customer. That is good news for a first time founder, because the demand is already proven.
New and unique business ideas
Unique business ideas do not have to be strange. Often the twist is in how you serve, not what you sell. A few examples from the list:
- Renting instead of selling. Ethnic wear rental and medical equipment rental let customers pay a little for something they need for a short time.
- Doorstep service. Car washing, deep cleaning and water purifier service go to the customer instead of waiting for them.
- Growing for a niche buyer. Microgreens grown on a rack at home sell to cafes and restaurants that want fresh garnish every week.
A new idea needs more effort to explain to customers. If you pick one, budget extra time for showing samples and building trust.
What is the most profitable business in India?
There is no single most profitable business in India, and anyone who promises you a fixed income is guessing. Profit depends on a few things you can control and a few you cannot:
- Margin. The gap between what you charge and what each sale costs you. Services usually have higher margins than reselling goods.
- Fixed costs. Rent, salaries and loan EMIs must be paid even in a slow month. Keep them low at the start.
- Repeat customers. A customer who comes back costs you nothing to find again.
- Your own hours. In the first year, most small businesses earn because the owner works long days.
Write these numbers down in a simple plan before you spend. Our business plan template and business model canvas help you do that in an evening.
Be careful with the world's best business opportunity
You will meet people offering the "world best business opportunity": pay a joining fee, buy a starter kit and earn by recruiting friends. Be careful. If most of the income comes from adding new members rather than selling a real product to real customers, walk away. A genuine business opportunity has customers who would buy even if there was no scheme behind it. Never pay large joining fees or hand over your savings because of a seminar or a video.
Basic registration for most new businesses
Most small businesses start as a sole proprietorship. You can begin with your PAN, a bank account in the business name and any local permission your work needs. Then add these as you grow:
- GST registration becomes compulsory once your yearly turnover crosses ₹20 lakh for most service businesses, or up to ₹40 lakh for sellers of goods in most states. Limits are lower in some states, and selling goods to other states needs GST from the first sale. See GST registration and check gst.gov.in.
- Udyam registration is free and online, and needs your Aadhaar. It helps with MSME loans and government schemes. See Udyam registration.
- FSSAI registration is needed for any food business. Small food businesses with turnover up to ₹1.5 crore a year can take basic registration, which costs ₹100 a year.
- Shop and establishment registration and a trade licence from your municipality, depending on your state and your type of business.

Where the starting money can come from
Use your own savings first for anything you have not tested. Once the idea is working, a loan can help you grow. Under the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana, banks give loans for small non farm businesses in four groups: Shishu up to ₹50,000, Kishore up to ₹5 lakh, Tarun up to ₹10 lakh, and Tarun Plus up to ₹20 lakh for people who have repaid a Tarun loan. PMEGP gives a subsidy on part of the project cost for new units. Read government loan schemes for business and work out your monthly repayment with the business loan EMI calculator before you apply.
When you have picked an idea, our guide on how to start a business walks you through the next steps one by one.
Questions people ask
Which business is best to start in India with little money?
Services that need your skill more than stock are easiest to start with little money. Repairs, cleaning, coaching, local listings for shops and microgreens can begin for under ₹1 lakh. Test with a few customers before you spend more. Our low investment business ideas page has more options.
What is the most profitable business in India?
No single business is the most profitable for everyone. Profit depends on your margin, your fixed costs like rent and salaries, how many customers return and how much time you put in. Pick an idea where you have a skill and the local demand is clear.
Do I need GST registration to start a business?
Not always. GST is compulsory once yearly turnover crosses ₹20 lakh for most service businesses, or up to ₹40 lakh for goods sellers in most states, with lower limits in some states. Selling goods to other states needs GST from the start. Check gst.gov.in for the rule that applies to you.
Is Udyam registration compulsory for a small business?
It is not compulsory, but it is free, online and needs only your Aadhaar and PAN details. It helps you get MSME benefits, loans under some schemes and protection on delayed payments from buyers. Register only on udyamregistration.gov.in, which charges no fee.
How do I know if a business opportunity is a scam?
Be careful if you must pay a big joining fee, buy stock you cannot sell or earn mainly by recruiting others. A real business has customers who buy the product for its own value. Never pay money because of a promise of fixed monthly income.
Can I get a loan to start a new business?
Yes. Under the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana, banks and other lenders give loans up to ₹20 lakh to small non farm businesses, and PMEGP offers a subsidy on part of the cost of new units. Interest and approval depend on the lender and your plan. Prepare a simple business plan before you apply.
