This guide shows how to start a clothing business, whether you want your own fashion label, a small clothing business from home, or a shop that resells garments bought from wholesalers. You can design and make clothes, get them made by a local tailor or factory, or buy ready stock and sell it online and offline. It suits people with a good eye for style and fabric who are also willing to learn pricing, stock control and selling. Most successful brands start small, with one clear type of customer and a few designs.

Clothing business ideas that suit a small start: kurtis and ethnic wear, kids' clothing, plus size wear, modest wear, workwear for women, gym and lounge wear, upcycled or thrifted clothing, school uniforms, custom tailoring and printed T shirts.

Is a clothing business profitable?

Clothing can carry a good margin between making cost and selling price, but a lot of that margin is spent on returns, discounts and unsold stock. What decides profit:

  • A clear niche: "comfortable office kurtis for tall women" sells better than "fashion for everyone".
  • Cost per piece: fabric, stitching, trims, labels, packing and shipping, all counted.
  • Stock control: making too many pieces in the wrong sizes ties up cash.
  • Returns: online fashion has high return rates. Good size charts and true photos reduce them.
  • Repeat buyers: people who come back for every new drop keep marketing costs down.

Honest risks: changing trends, cheap competition, quality problems from new suppliers and money stuck in old stock. Start with small batches and reorder what sells.

How much does it cost to start?

Approximate ranges for a small label or home based clothing business with a first collection of about 100 to 300 pieces.

ItemIndia (₹)US ($)
Samples and pattern making₹10,000 to ₹50,000$500 to $3,000
First production run or wholesale stock₹40,000 to ₹3 lakh$2,000 to $15,000
Labels, tags and packing₹5,000 to ₹25,000$300 to $1,500
Photos and models₹10,000 to ₹50,000$500 to $3,000
Website or online store setup₹5,000 to ₹50,000$200 to $3,000
Registration and trademark filing₹5,000 to ₹20,000$300 to $1,500
Launch marketing₹15,000 to ₹1 lakh$1,000 to $5,000
Approximate total₹85,000 to ₹6 lakh$4,800 to $32,000

A boutique shop adds rent, interiors and staff, which can push costs several times higher. Starting from home online keeps them low.

How to start a clothing business, step by step

  1. Pick your niche and customer. Age, budget, style, sizes and where they shop.
  2. Choose your model. Design and manufacture, private label from a factory, buy wholesale and resell, or print on demand.
  3. Study competitors. Note their prices, fabrics, fit complaints in reviews and gaps you can fill.
  4. Design a small first collection. Five to ten designs in core sizes is enough to test demand.
  5. Find makers and fabric. Visit wholesale markets, local tailoring units or small factories. Get samples and check stitching, fit and wash results.
  6. Cost and price every piece. Add fabric, stitching, trims, packing, shipping, platform fees, returns and your margin.
  7. Register the business and brand. Choose a name, check it is free, and consider a trademark filing.
  8. Add correct labels. Fibre content, care instructions and size, plus what local law requires.
  9. Shoot clear photos. Show the front, back, close fabric shots and a model with height and size worn.
  10. Set up sales channels. Your own store, online marketplaces, exhibitions, pop up stalls and boutiques on consignment.
  11. Launch to people you know first, collect feedback on fit and fabric, then fix before the next batch.
  12. Reorder winners and drop slow designs. Track sales by design and size every week.

Licences and registration

In India

  • Business registration: a proprietorship is the simplest start. See business registration in India.
  • GST: registration is needed once turnover crosses the limit for goods, which is ₹40 lakh in most states. Selling to buyers in other states generally needs GST registration whatever your turnover. Small sellers who sell only within their own state through online marketplaces can use a GST enrolment number instead, if they meet the conditions. See GST registration.
  • Udyam registration: free and online. See Udyam registration.
  • Shop and establishment registration if you open a shop or workshop with staff, under your state's law.
  • Packaging rules: pre packed garments sold to consumers need declarations such as maximum retail price and maker details under legal metrology rules.
  • Trademark: optional, but it protects your brand name.

In the US

  • Business entity and EIN: form an LLC or similar with your state, and get a free EIN from the IRS. Search names with the business entity search.
  • Sales tax permit: from your state if you sell taxable goods. Online sales to other states can also create sales tax duties once you pass that state's threshold.
  • Clothing labels: under FTC textile rules, labels must show fibre content, country of origin and the maker or seller, by name or an RN number. A separate FTC rule requires permanent care labels.
  • Children's clothing: must meet federal child product safety rules, including testing and tracking labels.
  • Local business license and home occupation permit if you work from home, where your city requires them.
