Is a salon business profitable?

Salons earn from services, which have low material cost, and from selling hair and skin products. What decides profit:

  • Chair use: an empty chair still costs rent and wages. Bookings and steady walk ins keep chairs busy.
  • Staff: good stylists bring their own clients, but they also cost more and may leave. Fair commission plans help keep them.
  • Service mix: colour, treatments, bridal makeup and packages earn far more per hour than a basic cut.
  • Repeat clients: most income comes from people who return every few weeks.
  • Location and rent: visible, safe and easy to park, but with rent you can carry in slow months.

Honest risks: staff leaving with clients, slow months between festive and wedding seasons, product wastage and complaints from a bad treatment. Training, patch tests and written consent for chemical work reduce these risks.

A home beauty parlour sits at the very low end. A large unisex salon in a prime area sits at the top.

How to start a salon business, step by step

  1. Get trained and certified. Take a recognised beauty or hair course. In the US, stylists must hold a state cosmetology licence.
  2. Pick your format. Home parlour, ladies parlour, men's grooming, unisex salon, bridal studio or nail bar.
  3. Study the area. Count nearby salons, check their prices, and note what is missing.
  4. Choose a location. Ground floor, clean and visible, with water supply and enough power for dryers.
  5. Write your plan. Services, prices, staff, costs and break even. Use the one page plan below.
  6. Arrange funding. Savings, a small business loan or a government loan scheme.
  7. Register and get licences. See the lists below.
  8. Design the space. Good light, easy to clean floors, a separate area for waxing and facials.
  9. Hire and train staff. Agree on salary, commission and hygiene rules in writing.
  10. Set up booking and billing. Take appointments by phone and online, and keep client service notes.
  11. Soft launch. Invite friends and neighbours for discounted services, fix problems, then open fully.

Licences and registration

In India

  • Shop and establishment registration: needed for a shop or office under your state law, usually within a set time of opening.
  • Trade licence: from your municipal corporation or local body. Rules and fees differ by city.
  • GST: a service business must register once yearly turnover crosses ₹20 lakh (₹10 lakh in some special category states). You can also register earlier by choice. See GST registration.
  • Udyam registration: free, online and paperless, and it helps with MSME loans and schemes. See Udyam registration.
  • Health or sanitation permission: some cities ask salons for a health trade licence or inspection. Rules differ by city.
  • Fire safety: larger salons in malls or commercial buildings may need a fire no objection certificate. Check with your local fire office.

In the US

  • Cosmetology licence: each stylist, barber, nail tech or esthetician needs a licence from the state board.
  • Salon or establishment licence: many states also license the salon itself and inspect it.
  • Business structure: a sole proprietorship needs no state filing, but most owners form an LLC with their state for liability protection. Fees differ by state. Check name availability with a business entity search.
  • EIN: a free tax ID from the IRS, needed if you form an LLC with partners or hire staff. The IRS says you never have to pay a fee for one.
  • Local business license: from your city or county. Some also need a zoning check or a certificate of occupancy for a shop.
  • Sales tax permit: from your state revenue department if you sell taxable goods. Rules on what is taxable differ by state. This usually applies to retail products, and some states also tax certain services.
