This guide explains how to start a trucking business, whether you plan to run one box truck, a semi truck as an owner operator, a tow truck or a small fleet. A trucking business is paid to move goods for shippers, brokers, manufacturers and retailers, locally or over long distances. It suits people who know the road and vehicles, can handle paperwork and rules, and can manage cash carefully, because fuel and repairs are paid long before some customers pay.

At a glance

Cost in India
₹5 lakh to ₹15 lakh (financed truck)
Cost in the US
$20,000 to $60,000 (financed truck)
Where it runs
On the road, small office or yard
Time
Full time
Skills
Driving, vehicle care, cost control

Costs are approximate starting ranges. They change with city, size and what you already own.

Many owners start with one vehicle they drive themselves, then add trucks and hired drivers once they have steady customers.

Is a trucking business profitable?

Trucking can be profitable, but margins are thin and costs move every week. What decides profit:

  • Rate per mile or per km compared with your full cost per mile or per km, including fuel, tyres, repairs, insurance, tolls and your loan.
  • Empty running. Every trip back without a load costs money. Return loads make or break a route.
  • Direct customers versus brokers. Direct contracts usually pay better and more steadily than one off broker loads.
  • Payment terms. Customers may pay in 30 to 60 days. Plan working capital or use invoice financing carefully.
  • Maintenance. Regular servicing avoids breakdowns that stop all income.

Honest risks: fuel price spikes, breakdowns, accidents, high insurance costs, driver shortages and slow seasons. Keep a reserve for at least two months of costs.

How much does it cost to start?

Approximate ranges for one vehicle. A new semi truck or a large Indian multi axle truck costs more than these used figures.

How to start a trucking business, step by step

  1. Choose your type. Local box truck delivery, long haul freight, refrigerated loads, construction material, car carrying or towing.
  2. Get the right licence. In the US, a CDL is needed for vehicles with a gross weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more. In India, drivers need a transport vehicle licence.
  3. Work out your cost per mile or per km so you never accept a load that loses money.
  4. Write your business plan using the table below.
  5. Form your business and get a tax ID or GST as needed.
  6. Buy or lease a truck. Have a mechanic inspect any used vehicle. Check its loan and permit history.
  7. Get your operating permits listed below before you take paid loads.
  8. Buy insurance. Liability, cargo and physical damage cover. US carriers must meet federal minimums.
  9. Find loads. Start with load boards, brokers and transport agents, then approach shippers directly.
  10. Set up billing and records. Track every trip, fuel bill, toll and payment.
  11. Plan maintenance on a fixed schedule.
  12. Grow carefully. Add a second truck and a hired driver only when you have steady work for both.

Licences and registration

In India

  • Commercial vehicle registration with the RTO, with fitness certificate, pollution certificate and insurance.
  • Goods carriage permit: a state permit for work within the state, or a national permit to operate across states.
  • Driver licence: drivers need a valid licence for transport vehicles.
  • GST: transport businesses have special GST rules depending on whether you work as a goods transport agency. See GST registration and speak to a tax adviser.
  • E way bills: most goods moved above the set value need an e way bill, usually made by the sender, which the driver must carry.
  • Udyam registration: free, useful for vehicle and working capital loans. See Udyam registration.

In the US

  • Business filing and EIN: form an LLC or corporation with your state and get a free EIN from the IRS.
  • USDOT number: from the federal motor carrier agency, needed for most commercial trucks in interstate work and in many states for local work.
  • Operating authority (MC number): needed for for-hire carriers moving regulated goods across state lines.
  • Process agent filing and federal insurance proof before your authority becomes active.
  • Unified Carrier Registration, IRP plates and IFTA fuel tax account for qualifying interstate trucks.
  • Heavy vehicle use tax: file IRS Form 2290 for trucks with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more.
  • Tow trucks: many states and cities need a separate towing licence or permit. Rules vary by state.

Questions people ask

How do I start a trucking business with one truck?

Get the right driving licence, form your business, buy or lease one reliable truck and get your permits and insurance. In the US that means a USDOT number and, for for-hire interstate work, operating authority. Find loads through brokers and load boards, then build direct customers.

How do I start a box truck business?

Buy or lease a box truck, register your business and get a USDOT number and any authority your work needs. Many box trucks are under 26,001 pounds, so a CDL is often not required, but check the vehicle's weight rating. Look for last mile, furniture and moving work.

How much does it cost to start a trucking business?

With a financed used truck, expect roughly $20,000 to $60,000 in the US or ₹5 lakh to ₹15 lakh in India for the down payment, permits, insurance and working capital. Buying a truck outright costs far more. Insurance is one of the largest first year costs in the US.

How do I start a tow truck business?

Buy a tow truck suited to the vehicles you will tow, get your business registration, USDOT number where needed and any state or city towing licence. Get liability and on hook insurance. Partner with garages, police rotation lists where allowed, and roadside assistance providers.

What should a trucking business plan include?

Your service type, lanes and target customers, rate and cost per mile or km, equipment and financing, insurance, monthly costs and the loaded miles needed to break even. Add a plan to cut empty running.
