Learning how to start a food business from home is the cheapest way into the food trade. A home food business cooks in your own kitchen and sells tiffins, meals, snacks, pickles, baked goods, sweets or festival orders to neighbours, offices and online buyers. It suits good home cooks who can follow hygiene rules, cook the same taste every time and manage orders on a tight schedule.

Costs are approximate starting ranges. They change with city, size and what you already own.

You do not need a shop to start. Many home cooks begin with a few regular tiffin customers or weekend orders, then add food delivery apps, a small team or a rented kitchen as demand grows.

Is a home food business profitable?

Home food can be profitable because rent is zero and you buy ingredients only for confirmed orders. What decides profit:

  • Your product. Tiffins give steady daily income. Cakes, sweets and pickles earn more per order but are more seasonal.
  • Ingredient cost. Price each dish so ingredients and packaging stay near 35 to 45 percent of the price.
  • Order volume. Cooking 30 tiffins takes only a little longer than cooking 15, so volume improves margins.
  • Sales channel. Direct orders keep all the money. Food delivery apps bring reach but charge commission.
  • Your time. Count shopping, cooking, packing and delivery hours, not just cooking.

Honest risks: one food safety complaint can hurt your name badly, burnout is common when you work alone, and the law limits what you can sell from home in many US states.

How to start a food business from home, step by step

  1. Pick what you will sell. Choose two to five items you already cook well. Browse our business ideas if you need inspiration, and start with food that travels well.
  2. Check your local rules first. In the US, read your state's cottage food law to see which foods you are allowed to sell from home.
  3. Test with friends. Ask 10 to 20 people to try your food and pay a small price. Note honest feedback.
  4. Cost each dish. Add ingredients, gas, packaging and delivery, then set a price with a fair margin.
  5. Get your food licence. FSSAI registration in India, or the permit or registration your US state needs.
  6. Set up a clean work area. Separate storage, labelled containers, hair covers, clean water and pest control.
  7. Choose packaging that keeps food safe and looks neat. Add a label with your name, contents and date.
  8. Start taking orders on a chat app or social page, with a fixed order cut off time.
  9. Plan delivery. Deliver yourself nearby, use a local rider, or offer pick up.
  10. Add food delivery apps once you can handle steady volume. They need your licence and bank details.
  11. Keep simple records of every order, cost and payment.
  12. Grow step by step, adding a helper, more items or a cloud kitchen when your home kitchen is full.

Licences and registration

In India

  • FSSAI registration: this is the main food business license for a home kitchen. Under the revised limits now in force, basic registration covers turnover up to ₹1.5 crore. Apply online on the FSSAI portal and show the number on your labels and menus.
  • GST: needed once turnover crosses the limit, or in some cases for online selling. Food delivery apps may ask for it. See GST registration.
  • Udyam registration: free and helps with loans. See Udyam registration.
  • Local permission: some cities or housing societies have their own rules for running a business from home. Check before you start.
  • Packaged food labels: packed items such as pickles and snacks must follow FSSAI labelling rules.

In the US

  • Cottage food law: most states let you sell lower risk foods made at home, such as many baked goods, jams and dry snacks, often with sales caps and label rules. Each state has its own list.
  • Home kitchen meals: selling cooked meals from home is allowed only in some states and counties. Otherwise you need a licensed commercial kitchen.
  • Registration or permit: some states need a cottage food registration or permit from the health or agriculture department, others need none.
  • Business license, EIN and sales tax permit: check your city, the IRS and your state revenue department.
  • Food handler training is required in some states.

Questions people ask

Which licence is needed for a home food business in India?

You need FSSAI registration, which is the food business licence for small food sellers. Under the revised limits now in force, basic registration covers turnover up to ₹1.5 crore. GST is needed once you cross the turnover limit or in some online selling cases.

How do I start a food business from home with no money?

Start with dishes you already cook, using your own kitchen and utensils. Take advance payment for orders so customers fund the ingredients. Get your FSSAI registration, which costs little, before you sell regularly.

Can I sell food from home in the US?

Yes, in most states, but only certain foods under the state's cottage food law, often with yearly sales limits and labelling rules. Selling cooked meals from home is allowed only in some states and counties. Check your state health or agriculture department.

What are good homemade food business ideas?

Tiffin services, baked goods, pickles, festival sweets, healthy snack boxes, regional meals and frozen ready to cook items are all popular. Pick what you cook best and what people near you cannot easily buy.

Is a home food business profitable?

It can be, because there is no rent and you cook to order. Profit depends on your pricing, ingredient cost, order volume and app commissions. Income is not guaranteed, so test demand before you invest.
